The laboratory of our department is dealing with experimental research as well with routine analyses. The team consists of three postdoctoral fellows including the head of the lab, Dr. Susanne Füssel. Furthermore, diploma students and PhD students of natural sciences as well as medical students work on different research projects within the scope of their theses. Experienced technicians contribute substantially to research and routine analyses.
The close connection to the clinic is reflected by several analyses and procedures which are performed routinely, e.g. the determination of tumor markers in blood samples of patients, urine analysis, semen analysis as well as cryopreservation of semen and testicular tissue. The routine analyses are carried out according to the international management standard DIN EN ISO 9001:2008.
With the consent of the patients, tissue samples are collected and organized in a biobank which is integrated part of the University Cancer Center (UCC) Dresden. These tissues are available for numerous research purposes. Experimental and clinical research is largely supported by external funding. It is mainly focused on the frequent urological tumors prostate cancer, bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma.
